a family business

Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.

PART 1:

1. What is your morning routine?

Well, I don’t typically have a certain schedule, but I usually get up in the morning at around 8 o’clock. Then I’ll take ashower to wake me up and have a quick breakfast before riding to work.

2. Do you like to get up early in themorning?

Actually I don’t keep a habit of getting up early in the morning. I usually get up at around 8 or 9, and probably I’ll do something to energize myself. This can be something from going for a run to get my heart rate up or I can just drink a cup of coffee.

3. Do you think breakfast is important?

Absolutely. People are quite busy now and it’s easy to let breakfast fall low in our list of priorities, but I think taking just a few minutes to eat can bring lots of benefits to our health and wellbeing.

4. Do you think it is important to have a relatively fixed morning routine?

Yes, of course. I think it’s important to make a To-Do list because if you don’t have a goal of what you’re going to do that day, you’re going to go through that day pointlessly and aimlessly. You might not get done things that you might accomplish if you were to make a fixed plan.

5. Has your morning routine changed in recent years?

Several years ago, I seldom did exercise in the morning, cuz I was just pretty much lazy at that time. But later on I find it’s quite amazing to go for a run, even for just a few minutes. It makes feel so energetic in the morning.

PART 2

Describe an interesting talk or lecture you heard recently

You should say:

When and where you heard it

What it was about

Who gave the talk or lecture

And explain why you think it was interesting

I want to share a short speech I heard in a work context. It was given by a manager in a place I was working. He was giving a speech to say goodbye to one of our colleagues who was leaving to set up as an independent consultant.

I think sometimes ‘leaving-do’s’ can be really awkward and embarrassing. This, however, was different.  Our manager had made a real effort to preparea good speech that was funny, well-researched, engaging and genuinely affectionate. For example, one of the things he did, was going back to our colleagues original application form and he put together a quiz for all of us to do, in which we had to guess what hobbies and qualifications they had declared all that time ago. It was a great way to ‘break the ice’ and involve everyone, and the results were hilarious. Even the colleague who was leaving was amazed at the contents of his original form. He also thanked the colleague for some very specific work that he had done, and read out comments from othersthat he had been collecting over the last couple of weeks which were minitestimonials and statements of appreciation from other colleagues.

The whole process was also not too long!  It held interest, and was appropriate for the context. For me, the speech was a really good example of how to communicate effectively on such an occasion.

Describe a family business

You should say:

What it is

Who their customers are

When and who started the business

And explain how you feel about this family business

Family business

Mr Li is my neighbour and owns his restaurant, which is his family business too. He has owned the business from his father and been continuing with his family members. He has engaged his brothers to run the restaurant located at a corner of the street in our community. Though there are lines of restaurants on the street, his restaurant is preferable to many of the tourists and also he proudly owns some regular customers. His restaurant offers different sorts of traditional Chinese cuisine for the customers. Besides, you can have your foods both in and outside of the restaurant.

The food ingredients are collected from the local markets and they never bring the low-quality ingredients. Moreover, the cooking preparation process is neat and clean like the other restaurants in the street. To maintain the restaurant, they are to remain busy almost around the day. The restaurant usually opens at 8.00 am and closes at around the midnight and the family members (except the kids) have to remain busy in line with the waiters to entertain the customers.

I like the restaurant also because Mr Li invited family when it was the inauguration of his restaurant after renovating from the mid of this year. He has decorated the restaurant beautifully and also has appointed three different chefs for cooking food for us. We really enjoyed the delicious food.
